How to Make Braid Outs Not Flat

    • 1). Wash your hair and condition it. Use a moisturizing shampoo in a low-sulfate formula, and a moisturizing leave-in conditioner to prevent dryness. Follow your usual shampoo routine, but do not dry your hair when you're done.

    • 2). Part your hair in the desired style with a small-tooth comb. Make sure the part is how you want it because it will be hard to change once your hair dries.

    • 3). Part and separate a piece of hair starting at the nape of your neck. For a fuller looking braid out, make the piece medium-sized, about the width of two fingers.

    • 4). Apply a dab of oil, such as olive oil or shea butter, to the sectioned piece of hair. Add a dab of gel -- preferably a gel formulated to accentuate waves and curls -- to make your waves more defined. Do not apply too much product because it may cause your braid-out to look limp and flat.

    • 5). Gently comb through the piece of hair using a small tooth comb. Start at the ends and work your way up to prevent tangling or snagging your ends.

    • 6). Divide the piece of hair into two smaller pieces. Begin twisting each piece over the other. Continue down to the ends until the entire piece of hair is twisted and looks like a braid.

    • 7). Part another piece of hair next to the braid you finished. Continue the same process as before for this piece of hair. Complete your entire head, working your way up from the nape and sides of your head to your crown, until all of your hair is braided.

    • 8). Sit under a hooded hair dryer for 45 minutes or until your hair is completely dry. If you do not have a hair dryer, or if you have extra time, allow you hair to air dry overnight. Feel all braids to make sure they are completely dry before removing them, otherwise your braid out may appear frizzy.

    • 9). Dab olive oil or shea butter on your fingers and begin unraveling each braid. The oil makes the waves smoother and prevents frizz. You should be able to start from the top of a braid and separate the twisted pieces by simply pulling them. Use a gentle motion to avoid disrupting the texture. Continue this process on each piece of hair until you unravel every braid. To increase volume, separate each unraveled piece of hair into two pieces until you reach the desired fullness.
