The pen.
A writing device used each day by millions across the world and I suppose to some degree taken for granted.
The pen actually preceded the pencil, a graphite form of carbon discovered by an undocumented individual in Keswick, England in 1564.
See, promotional pens.
The pencil improved and by 1795 was at it's height thanks to the French chemist Nicolas Conte, who pursued to patent the writing apparatus and developed it further using a formulation of both clay and graphite which was heated prior to being inserted in a wooden case.
With the fast advancement of the pencil, in 1861 Eberhard Faber erected the first pencil factory which could be found in New York.
Back in 500 BC, it is believed that the ancient Indians created a pen using bird feathers and bamboo sticks.
Quite a nifty device for those times.
In Egypt around a similar time, they were busy scrawling away on papyrus with reed pens from natural products such as sea rush.
The pen continued to develop throughout history taking various formations and gaining more and more positive attributes along the way.
1907 saw the introduction of the first solid-ink fountain pen.
An engineer by the name of Slavoljub Eduard Penkala liaisedd with an entrepreneur, Edmund Moster and fired up the Penkala-Moster company, building a pen and pencil factory which was the largest of it's time.
Now known as TOZ-Penkala, the company still runs to this day.
As the pen continued to mature, the 1960's saw the felt tipped pen come into play, designed in Japan by Yukio Horie.
Moving through to the 1980's, the rollerball pen was introduced and continued growing in popularity resulting in the pen being an integral part of the home, office, shop, school and possibly any establishment you could imagine.
With it's popularity, the pen has emerged into not only a useful implement but also a novelty item sold in multi colours with names etched into them creating perfect gifts.
The pen also provides a fantastic promotional resource for companies to print logos, phone numbers and email addresses.
If holding a conference, or meeting with potential clients, handing out promotional stationary is a great way to ensure your brand is noted and remembered.
It is also a good idea for those who want to make notes but have forgotten to bring a pen.
Saves the embarrassment of asking.
Pencils are also another great way for promotion and make a fantastic alternative to pens.
With so many styles available there is something to suit everyone.
You could choose a standard pencil or an older style wooden type, taking users back to their school days.
With so many websites offering deals on bulk orders, it is worthwhile shopping around and reading some reviews of previous experience.
It is more than likely that once you have made a deal with a company, they will offer you discount for future orders and contracts.
