    • 1). Familiarize yourself with the meaning of a phrasal verb to better understand this type of verb. Remember that: a phrasal verb is the combination of a verb such as 'come' with a preposition such as 'up' or a particle such as 'through.' Take note adding the particle or preposition slightly modifies the meaning of the verb to bring out a new meaning such 'come up' or 'come through.'

    • 2). Write down any phrasal verb you encounter and are not familiar with. Copy down the entire sentence in which the phrasal verb appears. Writing down new phrasal verbs with the whole sentence helps you to understand the context, that is how exactly the phrase is used.

    • 3). Find out the meaning of new phrasal verb. Do this the easiest way by writing down the synonym of the phrasal verb. Remember that synonyms are words or phrases with the same meaning as the phrasal verb. Ask meanings from a native English speaker, a teacher or look up in a Thesaurus and a dictionary.

    • 4). Learn phrasal verbs from stories and day-to-day conversations, as this is more interesting and easier. Read books and make it a habit of identifying phrasal verbs in the stories. Listen to other people speak and identify the phrasal verbs and how people use them.
