    Emporia State University

    • Emporia State University in Kansas provides aid to single parents with children through a $2,000 scholarship, as of 2011. The scholarship is awarded once per year to a student enrolled in at least 12 credit hours of coursework at the school. Applicants who are divorced or widowed are also eligible. The need-based scholarship is open to students who have legal custody of a minor child. Your financial need is determined through the information entered on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Winners must maintain a GPA of 2.75 or better throughout the duration of the scholarship term.

    Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Foundation

    • The Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Fund, which honors the former Hawaii congresswomen, offers scholarships to help low-income women with children afford higher education. The scholarship award can be used toward education at an accredited school. Scholarships are awarded to five mothers each year in the amount of $2,000, as of 2011.

    Denny's Single Parent Student Scholarship

    • Hispanic single parents can apply for the Denny's Single Parent Student Scholarship, which is administered by the Hispanic College Fund. Scholarship awards range from $500 to $1,500, as of 2011. Award amounts are based on the applicant's demonstrated financial need. Applicants must have a 3.0 or higher GPA to qualify. Proof that the applicant is a single parent may be requested once an application is under review. Some applicants are invited to participate in publicity activities sponsored by the scholarship program.

    Association on American Indian Affairs

    • If you put your education on hold to raise your children, you may be eligible for the Displaced Homemaker Scholarship administered by the Association on American Indian Affairs. The scholarship -- available to students who are from federally recognized tribes and who are at least 1/4 Indian blood -- helps students return to school after a hiatus because of family obligations. Applicants who currently work at a job that pays low wages and want to pursue a higher education to gain access to better-paying positions are also eligible. The scholarship award is $1,500, as of 2011, and applicants can apply each year to renew the award.
