A Career in Finance Could Certainly Be Lucrative

With the economic outlook still bleak and unemployment figures still at an all time high of 2.59 million it seems that job opportunities are not readily available. And it's not just the redundancies and pay cuts that have been made by large companies that are leaving people with less work but also developments in the social and business sectors that are causing some significant changes.

There are now more university graduates than there has ever been and as a result the degree is becoming less valuable; most employers will value experience far higher. And with such a diverse range of degree's, not all of which have practical applications it's hardly surprising that graduates can't find work in the over saturated job market. And even when they do have a relevant degree they are often told the lack the necessary experience for a career role and are over qualified for menial jobs.

In addition to these developments the Internet is also having some huge impacts on commerce, big chain stores such as Blockbusters and HMV, which have failed to create an online presence for themselves have recently fallen leaving many more unemployed. However it is arguable that these losses have been countered by the huge amounts of opportunities now emerging in the IT sector, which as the digital movement gains momentum is only going to grow.

Similarly the UK finance sector is another large sector, and despite the upturns, downturns, booms, and busts it remains one of the most sought after destinations for new graduates. When you consider the fact that graduate salaries in banking are among the highest in the UK it's not really too surprising. Institutions across the finance sector are now also offering competitive salaries in a bid to attract the best candidates and as a result this has lead to an increased competition for jobs in the sector. For instance in accountancy there around three graduates for every job.

Although the competition for a role in the UK finance sector might be fierce it's fair to say that once you get your foot in the proverbial door the finance sector can provide a very rewarding career. It might be true that the hours have a tendency to be longer but the financial benefits easily compensate for this. The vast majority of roles in this sector tend to be full time positions but there are some flexible and part time positions, and there are also a variety of diverse areas within the sector too.
