Femodene birth control overview
How do Femodene pills work?
Femodene pills work by controlling the naturally occurring female hormones in the body during the menstrual cycle. It contains two active ingredients, ethinylestradiol and gestodene, representing oestrogen and progesterone respectively. To prevent pregnancy, this medicine first of all stops an egg from being released by the ovaries. It helps in preventing ovulation. This contraceptive pill also thickens the cervical mucus, which is found at the neck of the womb. This action of the pill makes sure that sperm cannot travel up to an egg through the vagina. Femodene also makes some changes in endometrium to make it difficult for a fertilised egg to implant itself in the womb. This mechanism of the birth control pill comes handy only in the event of accidental fertilisation of an egg.
What are the possible side effects of Femodene?
Combined birth control pills usually have a higher rate of success compared to progestin-only pills. But at the same time, these two-hormone pills can also cause more side effects than their single-hormone counterparts. The most commonly reported Femodene side effects include blood clots, headache, stomach pain, decreased libido, weight-related issues, a skin condition known as chloasma, trouble with using contact lenses, and mood swings.
A number of women using Femodene contraceptive pills reported tender or enlarged breasts. Experts have observed that this is one of the most frequently occurring Femodene side effects but it should not create much concern. Fortunately, the majority of women who experienced this side effect had their problem resolved within 2-3 months. Clinical trials have suggested that breast-related problems are caused by the oestrogen content in this contraceptive pill. In any case, you should talk to your doctor before taking this birth control pill for preventing pregnancy.
Femodene is a monophasic medicine that contains the same amount of hormone in each pill within a pack. Some studies have suggested that breast tenderness/enlargement is a likely side effect of monophasic birth control pills.
How to take Femodene
Femodene is meant to be taken from the first day of your menstrual cycle. Each pack of this contraceptive medication contains 21 active pills and 7 inert pills. Take a pill each day and once the active pills are exhausted, start with the placebo pills. It is during the pill-free week that you are likely to have your period. Do not panic in case you missed one or two doses. You need to take the missed dose(s) as soon as you remember. However, if you miss three doses in a row, you must use other contraceptive methods for the next seven days to give yourself the best chance to prevent pregnancy. Talk to your doctor for more about this.
Microgynon contraceptive pill is also used to prevent pregnancy
