This book, thoroughly updated from its first edition published in 1991, is designed as a handbook to provide tools for public health professionals and others interested in controlling or eliminating occupational diseases and injuries. The format is similar to that of the best-selling handbook Control of Communicable Diseases Manual, also published by the American Public Health Association.

This manual is intended to provide guidance in identifying and preventing occupational diseases and injuries. The editors identify four fundamental tasks for prevention: (1) anticipation of the potential for disease or injury; (2) recognition of occupational disease and injury; (3) evaluation of relevant data; and (4) design and implementation of control measures. The book provides information to assist in performing these tasks.

This handbook is divided into three major parts. Part I presents public health strategies for prevention of occupational diseases and injuries, including the roles of law, education, management and government. Part II is an extensive compendium of adverse health outcomes caused by work. It is organized alphabetically and provides a description of the disease or injury, occurrence data, causes, pathophysiology, and preventive measures. Part III presents information on special topics: taking an occupational history, work organization, populations at high risk, preventing occupational disease and injury in developing countries, resources for disaster preparedness, and organizations and Web sites serving as additional sources of information. Since other texts are widely available on diagnosis and clinical management of occupational disease and injury, this book is not designed to be used for those purposes; rather, its focus is on identification and prevention of disease and injury in the unique environment of the workplace. Each chapter and section contains an extensive list of references for further reading.

This book is unique in occupational health literature. While offering a natural complement to more clinically oriented texts on occupational disease and injury, its focus on preventive approaches provides an invaluable yet handy reference for those with responsibility for public health in the workplace. Written for both health and safety professionals and informed lay readers, it also serves as an excellent educational resource.
