    • 1). Place the reclaimed shutters on a work surface. Sand the shutters with a fine-grit sanding pad to prepare them for primer and paint.

    • 2). Wipe off the surface of the shutters with a tack cloth to remove the dust left from sanding.

    • 3). Brush an even coat of primer onto the shutters with a paintbrush. Allow the primer to dry at least four hours. Apply two coats of paint over the primer with a paintbrush. Wait four hours between coats. Allow the final coat to dry 24 hours before continuing.

    • 4). Lay two shutters next to each other with long sides aligned. Position three hinges along each joint between the shutters, centered on the joint. Place the hinges 6 inches in from the ends of the shutters and one in the center of the length.

    • 5). Drive the screws included with the hinges through the mounting holes in the hinges into the shutters to join them together using a screw gun.

    • 6). Flip the two joined shutters over. Lay down the third shutter so it lines up properly with the other two. Attach three hinges in the same manner as the first set.

    • 7). Stand the shutters up and position them in a zigzag pattern to use as a decorative screen.
