How to Dye Black Jeans
- 1). Fill the large tub with hot water. Ensure the water level is high enough to completely submerge the black jeans. Put rubber gloves on and add the Rit dye to the bath as indicated on the manufacturer's directions.
- 2). Add 1 cup of salt to the bath. The salt is an active ingredient that helps the dye perform better. Prior to placing the jeans in the bath, dunk a cotton swab in and apply a small amount of the dye to the jeans. Allow it to dry for 30 minutes. Check the dyed spot to ensure that the end result is desirable.
- 3). Place the black jeans in the dye bath and begin stirring with the wooden dowel. The black jeans need to be in the bath for at least 30 minutes. Stir for four minutes, and then wait two minutes before stirring for another four minutes. Continue this until the 30 minutes has elapsed.
- 4). Rinse the black jeans with cold water until the rinse water is no longer black. Place them in the shower and run cold water over them, or take them outside and use a water hose if you're concerned about your tub turning black.
- 5). Put the black jeans in the dryer immediately after rinsing. Once the jeans are completely dry, examine the end result. The process may be repeated if the level of black desired isn't reached.
