Train Your Dog to Walk With You
Sharp turn method: When walking your dog, does your dog pull you along? Here is a method that may work for your dog; keep walking and suddenly without stopping your momentum turn sharply and walk in the direction that you came from.
Do this every time your dog forges ahead of you.
This action will get your dog to pay attention and slow down however, if you are not consistent with this method of training your dog will revert back to the old habits again.
The Halti Lead method: There is another style of training your dog to walk with a Halti Lead which controls the head movement and when your dog gets out of position it is gently brought back to walk without pulling.
The Halti is designed for dogs that pull when walking and the lead is fitted to the head similar in type to the halter used on a horse.
Using the Chain collar method: Position the ring on the links correctly to make the collar for the dog and it becomes known as the 'Correction Chain', incorrectly placed and it is known as the 'Choke Chain'.
The ring at the end of the chain when it is looped through to form a collar and it is placed correctly, the ring should sit above the links and it then becomes known as the 'Correction Chain'.
When the dog pulls, the chain momentarily tightens, it is loosened the moment the dog is in the correct position.
However, when the ring is positioned under the links it is tightened it will not release on its own accord because it locks tight around the dog's neck.
This is called a 'Choke Chain'.
I have found over the years that people refuse to use a 'Choke Chain' for this reason and when asked what the difference is - they don't know.
Both the 'Correction Chain' and the 'Choke Chain' are the same chain-only difference is how it is placed around the dog's neck as described above.
Using the chain collar in the correct manner will result in getting your dog to understand the most comfortable position.
There is nothing worse than being pulled along by your dog that you have no control over.
If you have not trained your dog in basic obedience then you will have no control over your dog by using a leather or cloth collar.
You will make more work for yourself by pulling your dog up every time it is pulling you and it will make no difference to the dog.
(Just tire you out every time you go out with your dog and you will not look forward to walking your dog).
When you have control over your dog such as being able to walk your dog with or without a lead and your dog comes to you, then you can change your dog's collar to that of a cloth or leather depending on the strength and size of your dog.
However I have always maintained the difference between work and play by changing or removing the collar - when it is training time, the 'Correction Chain' is slipped over the dogs head in the correct position with the ring being placed above the links.
The answer may be to join up with an Obedience Dog club or see a trained Obedience instructor on a one to one basis.
When you yourself have no training skills then you will need training and in turn you train your dog.
If all else fails and you are still keen on eradicating any problems that you experience with your dog then see an animal behaviorist or dog whisperer to find out what the underlying problem may be and whether it can easily be resolved.
