How to Use Forensic Evidence
- 1). Collect the evidence. This is done using precision methods so as not to tamper with, alter or destroy the evidence. The collection procedures depend on the evidence itself. Trace evidence may be collected by adhering tape over the evidence, pulling the tape up and placing another piece of tape on the other side to protect the evidence.
- 2). Label the evidence with the time, date, place and an ID number. The label should also include the name of the person who collected it and a chain of evidence log started to help track and maintain authenticity of the evidence.
- 3). Analyze the evidence using laboratory equipment. In the case of computer media, an image of the media needs to be created first and maintained as the best evidence copy. It may also be necessary to make copies of the image to be analyzed so that the best evidence is not used or altered itself.
- 4). Prepare the report of evidence findings. These reports are most useful to the investigation and subsequently, any court proceedings that may follow.
- 5). Present the evidence in court. This accompanies the report and expert testimony as to how the evidence was obtained, who handled the evidence, the analyzation process of the evidence, the results determined and the conclusions the evidence portrays.
