The Sussex Spaniel originated from Sussex, England and can be traced back to about 1860. The breed was developed in to a highly skilled field dog and became known as an excellent hunting companion. Though the breed is thought to be a slower hunter, it is still considered quite skilled.
The Sussex Spaniel is one of the earliest breeds accepted to the AKC - it was first recognized in the late 1800s.
The breed has remained fairly rare, though it is known to many as a pleasant and loyal companion.

About the Breed:
The Sussex Spaniel is a strong, sturdy, medium-sized dog that stands low to the ground. Though the breed may appear to be quite serious, the Sussex Spaniel has a very friendly yet stoic disposition.
The lovely, long and silky coat of the Sussex Spaniel is a beautiful rich golden liver color. This breed should be brushed out every day or two in order to maintain its beauty and keep it tangle-free. A basic grooming routine should be implemented, paying close attention to the ears.
Like all dogs with longer, floppy ears, the Sussex Spaniel may be prone to ear issues if not properly attended.
As with any dog, the Sussex Spaniel should receive daily exercise. This will help the dog focus and stay in optimum condition.
The Sussex Spaniel is a wise dog that should respond well to a good training program. As with all dogs, be sure to practice training on a routine basis. This breed should be very receptive and quick to learn. Proper socialization will help this breed to get along quite well with other dogs as well as children.
Fun Fact: A 10-year-old Sussex Spaniel named Stump took the title of Best in Show in the 2009 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.
