    • 1). Remove all furniture, artwork and other items from the foyer. If you can't put furniture in another room during painting, pile it in the center of the room and cover it with a painter's cloth. Cover the entire foyer floor with painter's cloth as well.

    • 2). Fill all nail holes or cracks in the wall with Spackle, using a putty knife. Allow to dry, then sand smooth with 220-grit sandpaper. While the Spackle is drying, clean any painted trim in the foyer with a damp rag and sand it so that it is no longer glossy. Wipe the trim with a damp cloth to remove the dust from sanding. This will give the paint something to stick to.

    • 3). Cover the top edges of the walls with painter's tape to protect them from ceiling paint. If you plan to paint the walls the same color as the ceiling, you don't need to tape them. Choose a paint with an eggshell finish and paint the ceiling. Use a brush to apply paint around the edges, then a roller to paint the body of the ceiling.

    • 4). Paint the walls next. Apply painter's tape to the floor to protect it from splatters as you paint the wall. Tape the trim as well if you plan to paint it a different color than the wall. Paint the walls, using an eggshell-finish paint. Use a brush to apply paint around the edges of the walls and a roller for the body.

    • 5). Apply painter's tape to the walls next to the trim once the wall paint dries. Paint the trim with short, even strokes using a brush and high gloss paint.

    • 6). Paint the ceiling, walls and trim with a second coat if needed. Remove the tape when the room is finished.
