The Dust Has Settled and We Are Still Here
He had Australians believing that the second the tax was passed house prices would increase and people would no longer be able to afford groceries to put on the kitchen table. But the 1st has passed and the facts are now on the table, as Julia Gillard states €The Carbon facts are now on the kitchen table'.
A poll was taken of the price of groceries in major supermarkets before the carbon tax, and then the same products were purchased from the same stores after the tax. The results show that there is no increase in the price of household groceries; in fact the price of bread has gone down.
This is the fear which Tony Abbott tried to force on people, a fear of no longer being able to afford the cost of living, the cost which has not increased even though compensation has been introduced, this leaves 90% of Australian households BETTER OFF rather than struggling as Tony Abbott would have had you believe.
John Conor from the Climate Change Institute has a good point to make about the introduction of the carbon tax.
€There's been so much focus on the potential impact of the carbon tax on the household budget, that it is almost easy to forget that it is supposed to help reduce Australia's impact on the environment. Anyone who thinks that the carbon tax is too expensive should think about what the alternative is for Australia'.
The fact is that Australia is a huge emitter of pollution into the atmosphere; we are the largest polluter in the developed world and as of yet we have not put in place schemes to address this. The carbon tax is part of something far bigger than just a slight rise in electricity prices; it is part of the €Clean Energy Future Plan'. A plan that is set out to help address the pollution issues in Australia. People are losing sight of this because they have been brainwashed by Abbott to believe that the only ramifications of the carbon pricing plan will be financial loss for themselves. As Julia Gillard states
€our world faces real and urgent threats from climate change like rising sea levels, a one metre rise would see a million people in our region on the move'.
People do not take into consideration what a massive impact this carbon tax is having on the environment. Australia cannot continue as it used to, pumping masses of pollution into the atmosphere, and expecting to not have massive environmental repercussions.
What this carbon tax really boils down to is not an extra 10cents on a household's weekly shop; it amounts to so much more than this. The Carbon Tax or Carbon Pricing Scheme is based in Australia's Clean Air Policy; it is addressing a problem which has long needed addressing.
On top of this the carbon tax is actually creating monetary gain for those who can see past Tony Abbotts spin campaign. The carbon pricing scheme has actually created a hugely profitable market. Based on creating and selling credits to the large emitters, profit can be made by those that can create the carbon credits, companies have been preparing for this for years and are now reaping the rewards.
Only land cleared pre 1990 can be used for generating carbon credits and therefore only those companies which have been forward planning are in a position to make money from this hugely lucrative market. Capital Alternatives are promoters for a project which is based in the Gippsland area of Victoria. Working with an ROE this project creates returns of 15% per year and carbon credits which can be sold on to the large emitters at $23 per tonne.
With opportunities such as this, the step which Australia is taking towards a cleaner energy future is so positive if people could only see past the €media rampage' that Tony Abbot has subjected them to, and realise how many opportunities for Australia this tax brings.
