Treatments for Permed Hair
- When it comes to washing and conditioning your hair, use products that are specifically made for permed or chemically treated hair. Use high-quality products that contain ingredients such as shea butter, B-vitamins and natural oils. The shampoos should be ammonium-based. Limit shampooing to three times a week to keep from drying out your hair, and use a leave-in conditioner so you hair can absorb the moisture. Keep blow-drying to a minimum because this can also damage hair with too much use.
- Hot oil treatments can be done at home with a kit available for purchase at your drugstore. Many hair care companies offer some type of hot oil treatment. It involves massaging oil into your hair and scalp and covering it in plastic so that your hair can absorb the oil. These can also be done using home products such as olive oil, canola oil or mayonnaise. The dryness of the hair will determine how long to leave it in your hair. Follow by washing it out with a shampoo for permed hair.
- Keratin treatment is a smoothing therapy that infuses strength and moisture into the hair cuticle. Keratin works by penetrating the hair and repairing it from the inside. Depending on the type of treatment selected, one treatment can eliminate up to 95 percent of frizz, leaving the hair soft and shiny. It can also be used as an option for temporary hair straightening. Mostly offered at high-end salons, different treatments can vary in time from 20 minutes to two hours.
- Deep conditioners are typically used once a week or every two weeks. These provide more conditioning than everyday conditioners and are different from leave-in conditioners because you wash them out. Deep conditioners are applied after you shampoo and should be left in for up to five minutes. Leave-in conditioners are sprayed or massaged in after you shampoo and left in the hair to dry. Leave-in conditioners can also be used every time you shampoo.
