The obvious reason that dogs scratch is because they have an itch, and this can be due to a range of causes such as fleas or allergies or flies.
Excessive scratching on the same spot can result in a hot spot being formed which means the underlying skin has become infected and you should consult with your local Vet.
When you notice an area on your dog's skin starting to look sore then it is time to start investigating the cause, and your local Vet should be able to help you out.
In order to stop your German Shepherd from scratching you have to first identify the cause.
Some of the more common causes of scratching are as follows: Allergies: Excessive scratching can be caused by plant pollens similar to hay fever in humans as well as certain foods in your dog's diet.
For the correct diagnosis and subsequent treatment plan you should see your local Vet.
Parasites: Your dog could be scratching because they have a parasite problem due to mites, flies or fleas.
You need to ensure that you treat your dog and all other pets in your household including cats regularly against parasites otherwise you are just wasting your money by just treating the one animal.
Infection: Fungi and yeast are a very common cause of infection which is usually identified by looking at your dog's skin which is red and looks irritated.
If you suspect your dog has a skin infection then a trip to your local Vet is required.
There is a very uncommon cause of scratching known as Neurogenic scratching which can sometimes be attributed to a lack of mental stimulation or separation anxiety.
It is only possible to diagnose this condition after all other causes have been ruled out.
This type of scratching is very difficult to stop, although you can try to keep your dog entertained with various toys and ensure they are getting enough exercise.
