How to Keep Your Dog Off the Furniture

Sometimes dogs will want to be on your furniture.
After all, it is comfortable, it is where you as the owner hang out, and it smells like you - which may be very comforting to your pet.
For some people this is not a problem at all.
For others, this is a big issue because the owner of the dog does not want the dog on the furniture.
If you want to keep your dog off your furniture, there are things that you need to do.
The big problem though is that while you can correct the dog while you are home, it's hard to correct the dog when you are away from the house.
The first thing that you need to know is that the dog is sitting on the furniture because it's comfortable.
If the couch is better than anything the dog has to lay on, he or she will be on the couch regardless if they know that they are not supposed to.
You need to make a comfortable place for the dog to lay on in that same room.
If it's a more comfortable spot, he or she will want to be there versus on your furniture.
Another strategy is to make the furniture less comfortable.
Some will take those plastic carpet runners and turn them upside down.
This points the little plastic spikes up making it less comfortable to lay on.
Also consider putting things on the couch when you leave for the day making it hard for the dog to be on it.
Some use sprays that will help keep pets away from certain furnishings.
Some of these are smells that dogs and even cats don't like at all.
There are also motion sensor sprays that will direct a puff of air which can be used to keep pets to stay off certain things.
If the dog has been doing this behavior for a number of years, it's going to be very difficult to change it.
You might have to go to obedience school to have any chance of getting rid of habits that have been there for years.
