Our kitchens are the most used rooms in our homes for most of us, and most of us really, really don't like to clean them.
Unfortunately, we have to, because food preparation happens here, which means the space itself has to be clean and sanitary.
However, some kitchen cleaning tips can help you get and keep your kitchen clean and tidy, with relatively little time and effort.
Doing dishes Because dishes are so pervasive and always have to be done, this is probably one of the hardest jobs to do, especially if you don't have a dishwasher.
As soon as you clean one set of dishes, presto, another seems to be ready and waiting to be cleaned.
If you do have a dishwasher, this job can be streamlined and made much easier.
If you don't have a dishwasher, you can still take steps to make it easier.
Taking small steps if you don't have a dishwasher If you're not lucky enough to have a dishwasher, streamlining "doing dishes" is still going to help you get them done as easily and quickly as possible.
Depending on how many dishes you get dirty in the course of the day, do them at least once a day when you're done eating, or do them after every meal if you have a lot.
What you want to make sure happens is that you can do the dishes, fill the drainer up, have a clean sink, and let the dishes air dry without having to be towel dried; that, in turn, will make the job easier.
When you wash your dishes, you can do it in a sort of "automated" fashion so that it's done as quickly and easily as possible.
So, fill one section of your sink with hot, soapy water and leave the other side (if you have two sides) empty.
As you wash the dishes, place soapy, clean dishes in the empty side of the sink.
When that's done, rinse them quickly, put them in the drainer, and you're done.
Once dry (within a couple of hours), you should put the dishes away.
If you're lucky enough to have a dishwasher If you're lucky enough to have a dishwasher, this process is pretty simple.
The idea here is that you want to use your dishwasher to "store" dirty dishes until you have a dishwasher load, run the load, put the dishes away, and fill the dishwasher up again.
Don't leave dirty dishes sitting in the sink, and don't leave clean dishes sitting in the dishwasher; keeping your dishwasher empty of clean dishes will make sure your sink is always clean and your dishwasher is ready to be run again as soon as it's full.
Cleaning your sink Cleaning your sink is going to be much less of a chore if you keep your sink empty of dirty dishes.
Once a week to every couple of days or so, you can give your sink a good scrub with some cleanser or some baking soda, but otherwise, simply rinsing and then wiping it out should keep it clean and tidy.
Cleaning your countertops Clutter on countertops can really thwart any efforts to keep your kitchen looking tidy.
So keep countertops as clear as possible.
Don't pile dirty dishes on them, and keep as little stored on them as you can.
Of course, appliances like coffee makers, toasters, and so on may "live" on the countertops, but keep them as empty as possible so that you can keep them as clean as possible.
In addition, this'll make cooking easier for you, since you will have cleared countertop space to work on.
Give them a good wipe down with a clean, soapy rag and rinse on a regular basis to keep things sanitary.
Appliances To keep your appliances like microwave, refrigerator and stove cleaner longer, wipe up spills as soon as they happen.
Thoroughly clean at least every season or once a year, depending on how often it's needed.
Pay special note to your refrigerator, because you can make yourself sick if you don't clean this thoroughly and make sure you toss all spoiled food regularly.
Floors Wipe up spills as soon as they happen to keep your floors clean between scrubs.
If you do this, usually you should only have to mop or scrub them about once a week.
Sweep your floors every day or as soon as dry spills happen, to minimize the amount you have to clean them.
The key with all kitchen-cleaning tips is to do them regularly.
If you do the dishes every day, you'll get in the habit and they won't pile up.
The same is true for all other kitchen cleaning tips, too.
If you do daily cleaning as needed, you'll find thorough cleaning jobs to be much easier when the time comes to do them.
