    Categorizing

    • Problem number one when it comes to home organization and storage is what George Carlin once called, "too much stuff." Getting rid of belongings you no longer need makes keeping your home organized much more feasible. Set aside an entire day to categorize your rooms. Separate your things into three groups: a group of things you definitely use and need regularly, a group of things you want to keep but don't need very often, and, finally a pile of things that you no longer need or want. The last group is the easiest to deal with--donate it or, if it's truly useless, throw it away. Place regularly used items in visible, easily accessible places. Store the objects you don't use on a regular basis.

    Closets

    • Take inventory of your closets. Get rid of anything you haven't worn in a year or more by donating it to charity--this includes shoes. Invest in a closet organizer. Simple shelves or a collapsible hanger system allow you to fit more into each closet neatly. Hang clothes by season, color or occasion to make them easy to find. Hang or fold garments as you do the laundry to make a habit of keeping things where they belong.

    Home Office

    • Organization is paramount in a home office so that you can get tasks accomplished, remember with what needs to be done and what has already been done or paid. Install cord covers along floors to conceal cables from the various pieces of electronic equipment where they cross high-traffic areas. This prevents tripping and creates a neat appearance. Refrain from keeping unnecessary documents on the desk--organize your papers by category and make use of drawers in your desk or purchase filing cabinets if you need more storage space. Keeping the counter surface clear encourages you to keep it that way.

    Bins

    • Plastic bins come in all shapes and sizes. They are also relatively inexpensive. Store items in them that can be kept in an attic, closet or basement. Their snap-on lids keep moisture and any potential critters out. Take advantage of stackable models to save floor space--you can store far more objects in a small space when they are organized into bins than you could without them.
