My Closet Needs a Makeover!
1) First you need to get rid of the junk. If you've used your closet for storing items besides your clothes, shoes and accessories, you may need to find other places for those things to go. Don't let items that aren't necessary take up valuable space in your closet. If you want to store some things in your closet, like your clothing that is out of season, then put it up high on the top shelf. If you notice space between your storage and the ceiling, consider moving the top shelf up or adding another shelf so that you can store things that you don't use very often up high.
2) Categorizing your clothes can help you to find them quickly when you need them. You may decide to divide your closet in half, building or placing shelves down the middle section. Another alternative is to add an extra hanging bar by moving the existing one up higher. Divide your clothing according to type and use. First, separate your work clothes from your casual clothes. Then, separate tops, bottoms, skirts, jackets, coats and suits. Having a place for each thing will make it really easy to find what you need when you need it, without having to search through the entire closet. You can even organize clothing by length, creating extra space beneath your clothes, or separate them by color so that you can quickly grab what you need.
3) Getting rid of things that you don't use often is a great way to keep your closet organized long-term. A popular way to do this is to hang your clothes with the clothes hangers facing backwards. At the end of the season, get rid of items that are still hanging backwards because you didn't use them. Using the right hangers is a great way to protect your clothing, too. Cedar hangers have many benefits, including moisture and odor control for your closet. Sturdy metal hangers help you to save space, while specialty hangers give you somewhere to easily store belts, skirts, hats, and ties.
