What is the Correct Way to Wear Scottish Highland Dress?
- Standard menswear begins with the kilt. Look online to find the correct tartan for your family. If you are not Scottish or do not know your family's connection, you can wear the plaid that represents Scotland. Many Scottish cities also have specific tartans.
The kilt is the centerpiece of the outfit and the most expensive. Wear a white shirt and black or tartan necktie with a tweed jacket for informal wear and a black tuxedo jacket with vest and bow tie for formal events. Kilt hose or stockings are held up by a garter and flash. The flash is usually a bit of your tartan. Men's shoes are called "ghillies" or "brogues." Made of black leather, they resemble oxfords with openwork on the top. Laces extend to the ankle.
The outfit can be accessorized with a tam or bonnet. You can also wear your clan crest on the buttons and cuff links of the jacket. A sporran, or men's purse, hangs in the center of the kilt. Shoes and buttons must be polished, the pleats of the kilt should have a sharp edge, and the jacket and shirt should be pressed. - Women do not wear the kilt. Women wear an A-line or pleated skirt of the tartan. The skirt should reach to just below the knee or to the ankle on formal occasions. A white blouse with lace at the throat and cuffs can be accessorized by a tartan shawl or sash that matches the skirt. A black velvet jacket or vest can also be worn. Women wear nylons and black pumps with their outfit.
