How to Determine If Your Pottery Is Indus
- 1). Examine the rim of the piece of pottery. There are approximately five known types of Indus pottery. The rim will either be straight, inverted or everted. It may also have a handle.
- 2). Look at the body of the piece of pottery. If it is Indus, it will either be globular, carinated (having a ridge) or straight-sided.
- 3). Determine the type of base. A piece of Indus pottery will either be flat or rounded.
- 1). Look for bold, linear markings carved into the pottery. These lines may have been used for decoration or to provide a better grip.
- 2). Determine the color of paint used on the pottery. Indus pottery was primarily plain, although yellow and red painted examples are not uncommon.
- 3). Look for patterns in the paintings. The designs will look foliated or will be in geometric patterns.
