With proper care, Oak furniture can last for generations.
Oak is a very hardy material which means that it can take a great deal of use and abuse, the furniture (as long as it is designed well) will look just as amazing as it did the first time you placed it in a room.
There are different types of oak furniture available.
Each type requires its own special care.
For example, green oak is mostly used for outdoor furniture and its treatment can take upto four years.
Oak has tannin in it.
Over time, be it indoor or outdoor furniture, unfinished oak furniture can start to stain.
To avoid these stains from occurring, all untreated oak furniture needs to be looked after.
There is not much involved in caring for such furniture.
All you have to do is dampen a piece of cloth with an appropriate wood oil.
Do not use water at any cost as this will often raise the grain of the wood.
You will often see a dark stain around steel nails and bolts that are used on oak, this is due to the tannin reacting with the steel.
Most people see this as a feature in building but often this is why furniture is glued and wooden pegged.
Oak furniture has the ability to withstand some elements without much care.
For others, care must be taken.
If any water is spilled and is not dried off immediately, it will leave a mark.
You will need to wax your oak furniture every other month for the first few years.
Waxing the furniture helps the grains stay adhered and helps save the wood from crazing and cracking.
Let's not forget that it will keep the finish on the furniture for longer.
Always apply wax with a clean cloth.
Your hand direction should be the same as that of the grain.
It will help protect the grain.
When you remove the wax, it is again important that you buff with the grain.
It will minimize air pockets and streaking.
I have heard that you can remove the stains that are caused by drinking glasses or other such sources by massaging the area with butter.
Massage the marks with butter or margarine and leave it for the night.
Wipe it clean in the morning and polish the piece of furniture.
People also use a mixture of cigarette ash and olive oil.
This dulls the polish over time, so it is a good practice to polish the furniture once you are done with the stain removal home remedy.
I would recommend that if you try the above remedies that you do it on an area that is not visible first to see what effect it has.
If there are any scratches on your oak furniture, then you can sand it down.
If, however, the scratch is big and you can't take care of it with simple sanding, it is best to leave it for an expert.
