Ergonomics is the study of man and machine interface, and when applied to the bathroom design it is the art of designing the available space to fit the client's exact needs - first impressions here are very important! Proper ergonomic design makes using your bathroom and shower room seem effortless and stress free.
The designer's aim is for the client to take the bathroom ritual for granted not realising how fittings, equipment and layout work together.
To understand how people interact with all the elements of a bathroom, a professional designer will apply hard learnt design principles to optimize the user's well-being and performance.
The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
This 'fit' between people, technology and the environment will always take account of the user's capabilities and limitations.
How a shower door opens or slides is extremely important.
A sliding door needs to be hung in such a way that its movement is silent and effortless moving into place with ease and without drama.
Similarly with the behaviour of shower doors, the door handle should fit comfortably in the hand, feel solid, have no "play" or unwanted movement and have clean smooth edges in keeping with its environment.
The hinged door action itself should be positive, opening and closing with silent ease.
Aesthetics is the appreciation of beauty and good taste and in their own right can make any bathroom experience a true pleasure - from the feel of the floor underfoot to a light or dark atmosphere and the quality and feel of the fittings.
The whole package needs to be a blend of textures and shapes that are visual as well as textural.
It is always best, where ever possible, to use quality materials, some of which could be vernacular (of local origin) - stone, ceramics, glass, wood, stainless steel and chrome are all obvious choices - how about slate, terracotta, granite where applicable? For a shower enclosure, perhaps the most effective of these materials is the mix of glass and marble.
When cleverly combined they can convey a natural environment that is a total pleasure to use, easy to clean and wonderful to admire.
