The Acropolis

The acropolis in Athens was the hilltop highpoint of the city. It was once a fortified (walled) citadel. It became a sacred area with the establishment of the cult of Athena Polias in the 8th century B.C. Her temple was on the northeast side of the hill. The acropolis was the site of religious festivals in Athens. It was at its peak during the Periclean era when the acropolis was rebuilt because the Persians had destroyed it.
In this picture of the Acropolis, you can see, among other things, the remains of the acropolis' most famous building, the Parthenon.
