Definition:

Lustratio (lustration), part of an ancient religious purification rite, consisted of sprinkling water and a burning. A whole city could be purified by a lustratio. The Romans used the lustratio for more than purification. They also used it when asking for the help of the gods.

The Greek term for lustratio is katharsis (catharsis).
