How to Get Rid of Mold Caused by Water Damage
- 1). Dry up the entire area. This will likely involve extracting moisture using a wet/dry vacuum cleaner. Fans and a dehumidifier can also help, along with opening windows.
- 2). Throw out porous materials or those that have been badly saturated or covered in mold. This can include, but is not limited to, carpeting, upholstered furniture, books, stuffed animals, fabrics and wood items.
- 3). Create a cleaning solution with a generous amount of detergent in a bucket of warm water. Use this mixture to thoroughly scrub all remaining surfaces that have mold from the water damage.
- 4). Rinse the areas with plain water and dry using the same methods that you used in Step 1.
- 5). Create a disinfecting solution of 1/2 cup of bleach per gallon of warm water. Dip a large sponge in the solution and wet all areas that had contact with the water, not just areas that had visible mold.
- 6). Let the bleach and water mixture dry on its own. This completes the disinfection process, kills mold spores you can't see and reduces the chances that the mold will return.
