    • 1). Create the first symbol. On a piece of construction paper, cut out an asterisk shaped star (see references for a visual). This symbol is considered the star of life, used by the Emergency Medical Care Professionals.

    • 2). Trace the first star of life onto the top sheet of a stack of green construction paper. Cut out the symbol from the stack, creating dozens of the star.

    • 3). Draw the pole with a snake-like figure wrapped around it on the center of each star, as seen in references.

    • 4). Create the second symbol. The American Red Cross T-shaped cross symbol is widely recognized as being associated with medical aid and relief, and specifically with blood drives. Choose red construction paper for this shape, as it is the actual symbol color and is also festive.

    • 5). Draw the cross shape. For a guide, try tracing half a ruler horizontally and vertically to create a well-proportioned cross shape. Cut out the cross to use for tracing.

    • 6). Trace the cross onto the top sheet of a stack of red construction paper. Cut out the symbol from the stack, creating dozens of the cross.

    • 7). Prick a hole in the top of each star and cross with scissor or a pin.

    • 8). String the yarn or string through each hole, alternating symbols, to create a strand of garland. Hang as desired.
