How to Treat Staph Infection in a Dog
- 1). Take your dog to the vet as soon as you suspect he may have a staph infection. The vet will do further testing, like a skin biopsy, to make the correct diagnosis.
- 2). Pick up the medication your vet prescribes and purchase a topical ointment or shampoo. Your vet will prescribe an antibiotic like amoxicillin with clavulanic acid, lincomycin, or oxacillin, among others. You can buy an antimicrobial body wash or ointment at a pet store or online.
- 3). Administer the antibiotics orally. You need to administer them every day without fail for three to six weeks. If you do not use all the antibiotics, or you miss a day, you run the risk of the infection recurring.
- 4). Wash your dog with the antimicrobial shampoo and/or apply topical ointment. Both will make his skin feel better and will help kill the staph bacteria.
- 5). Consider supplementing your dog’s food with omega-3 fatty acids. They can help get rid of the infection and prevent itching.
