Household chores are often looked on as a necessary evil, a waste of time that could be better spent doing something more creative or enjoyable. But this can be turned around. Getting to grips with household tasks can actually be rewarding, even, believe it or not, fun. The key is to have the right attitude and to find a system that works. Most people do not want to be surrounded by chaos and mess, therefore spending time ensuring that this does not happen has got to be a good thing. Do not underestimate the satisfaction that a calm, ordered environment can bring. - Spring-cleaning doesn't have to be done only in the spring. Try tackling jobs like window cleaning, dusting behind furniture and turning the mattress several times through out the year. Do a room at a time. Start at the top of the house and work down. Also start at the top of a room and work down. Reward yourself by listening to music while you work and have coffee breaks. If the whole house seems a daunting prospect, just concentrate on one room at a time.
- It is a good idea to clean up as you go and to spend 10 minutes tidying your environment before going to bed. If there is an area in the house that is a particular thorn in your side, try spending just 15 minutes a day tackling it. You will soon begin to see a difference. Take advantage of tidy trays and bright storage boxes where children can be taught to keep their toys.
- If you feel uneasy about using the strong cleaning products that are on the market today, try using natural alternatives whenever you can. Many stains, including tarnish on brass, can be removed by using a lemon juice and salt paste. A little white vinegar in water can be used to put a shine on windows. White vinegar, diluted in water, will also shine taps. Researching old-fashioned and low-tech cleaning tips can be informative and enjoyable.
