Ana Quits
Episode 2x20, Two for the Road - Flashback Scene 1In a parking lot are several cop cars. Ana-Lucia drives in and her mother, Captain Cortez, comes up and says she looks tired. She asks where Ana-Lucia was last night.
She says she was home. "Cooked myself some dinner. Watched some T.V."
"What'd you watch?" Captain Cortez wants to know.
Ana-Lucia gives her a resigned look and the Captain says, "Let's go for a drive."
At the morgue, a sheet is removed over the dead guy that Ana-Lucia had shot. "Remember Jason McCormick?" the Captain asks. "Found him in a parking lot just after three in the morning. He was dead an hour before anyone even saw him. Crime scene pulled a gun from the dumpster. Registration was filed off. No prints. No witnesses. He was executed."
Ana-Lucia says, "Any idea who did it?"
"Yeah, Ana, you did. This man confesses to shooting you in cold blood and you refuse to I.D. him, so we have to cut him loose. A week later he shows up with five bullets in his chest because someone shot him in cold blood."
"Guess I should get a lawyer," Ana-Lucia says. She turns to leave, but her mother stops her.
"Look, we both know this is going to be a dead end investigation, but Ana, if you did this, you have to let me help you."
"Thanks, Ma, but I don't need your help." She walks away.
Captain Cortez yells, "You don't want my help, you're going to have to get it from somewhere else. You're a police officer, Ana.
If you don't respect me, at least respect that."
"Then I quit," Ana-Lucia very calmly says. She hands her mother her badge. Her mother wraps her own fingers around Ana-Lucia's. Ana-Lucia drops her hands and walks away.
Christian Shephard
Episode 2x20, Two for the Road - Flashback Scene 2In the airport, Ana-Lucia is using the wand to check people going through security. She frowns at each person as they come through. Then she goes to the airport bar and says, "Hey, Mike," to the bartender, "tequila tonic."
"Long day, huh?" The guy next to her at the bar says. He comes into focus and it's Jack's father, Dr. Christian Shephard. "Good to see you again. You, uh, wanded me at security." He finishes his drink and asks for another. "So how does one get into wanding?"
"One stops being a cop," she says.
"What a coincidence," he says. "I just stopped being a doctor."
"Why'd you quit?"
"I didn't," Dr. Christian says, "my son ratted me out for drinking on the job. Lost my license."
Ana-Lucia chuckles and he sarcastically says, "Yeah, it's hilarious."
"No," she says, "it's just that I don't believe parents and their kids should work together. Too many issues."
"I'll drink to that," he says.
"So where you headed?"
"Sydney, Australia. Want to come?" he asks.
"Why would I go to Sydney with you?"
"Maybe fate has just thrown us together. Two drinks in an airport bar."
"Why would fate do that?"
"Same reason fate does anything, so we can help each other out. You do need help, right?" They stare at each other a moment and he says, "Unless you don't." He moves closer. "What I'm doing down there could be a little dangerous and I need someone to protect me. A bodyguard. It's perfect for someone who stopped being a cop."
"I don't even know your name," she says.
"Eh," he says, "let's not use real names. I tell you what, why don't you pick a name for me and then I'll pick one for you?" They both take a drink.
"You look like a Tom."
"Tom. What an excellent name. And you should be a Sarah."
It's Time
Episode 2x20, Two for the Road - Flashback Scene 3Ana-Lucia is in bed. She looks at the digital clock, 3:51. She gets up and grabs a drink and looks at the view of the Sydney skyline. A bang at the door and Christian says, "Sarah?" He bangs again. "Sarah, open the damn door!"
She puts on a robe and opens the door.
Christian stands there, drunk and unshaved and says, "Good you're up. It's time. Protection duty. Come on let's go."
"After four days of drinking and doing nothing," she says, "now, in the middle of the night, you're ready to go?"
"That's exactly right. It's time, come on. Fate's calling, Sarah."
They drive through the rain, listening to Patsy Cline. "This is it, pull over right here."
She pulls up to the curb of a nice house. "This is what you needed protection from, the suburbs?"
He takes a drink. "Stay in the car."
"Should I keep the meter running?" she asks sarcastically. She watches him walk to the door and bang on it.
A woman answers and the two argue. Ana-Lucia watches intently and as they get louder she can pick up some of what they say.
Christian says, "She's my daughter and I have a right-"
"No, you don't have a right," the woman says with an Australian accent.
The arguing gets worse and she tries to shut the door, but Christian won't let her. It gets physical and Ana-Lucia jumps out and grabs Christian, who's yelling, "I just want to see my daughter!"
"What the hell is wrong with you?" Ana-Lucia says as she drags him off.
"Don't you ever come back here!" the woman yells.
"I was just having a conversation with the lady," Christian tells Ana-Lucia.
"You need help!" the woman yells.
