Considering the Paranormal

More Common Than Realized

As relatively rare as paranormal phenomena are, however, they are not uncommon either. There are hundreds of thousands of first-hand accounts like those listed above (and some far stranger) to be found in the literature, and now on the Web. Ghosts, out-of-body experiences, time slippages, encounters with mysterious creatures and beings, episodes of clairvoyance and precognition, near-death experiences.

None of them are explainable from scientific reference points, yet they have been a part of the human experience since the beginning of recorded history. In fact, a person is far more likely to have a paranormal experience than he or she is to win the lottery or be struck by lightning. You may have had one yourself. Ask your friends and relatives. Everyone has a story of some unexplained event. They might not all be valid; maybe most of them aren't. But all we need is one valid, inexplicable event to say that perhaps the world doesn't quite work exactly the way the science books say it does all the time. Of course there are more than one event; there are many.

A New Understanding

It's this abundance of anecdotal evidence that should lead us to conclude that there is much more to life on this planet than we are currently aware of or understand. Because science cannot yet explain these phenomena does not mean they do not exist or are not true. And it does not mean that science will not someday understand these phenomena.

In fact, we may be on the verge of understanding a lot of these weird goings-on:
  • Research being conducted at the respected uiversities around the world have demonstrated the effect of psychokinesis - the ability of the mind alone to significantly affect a random outcome.
  • The rigorous scientific experiments of Dr. Gary E. Schwartz are proving that human consciousness survives after death.
  • The study of quantum mechanics, where subatomic matter is seen to behave in a most unusual and illogical way (and might be connected to human consciousness), could in the coming decades lead to a scientific understanding of much of what we now consider paranormal phenomena.
