How to Rig a Graveyard in a Yard for Halloween
- 1). Purchase cardboard, styrofoam or plastic gravestone markers or make your own from those or other materials. Most pre-made gravestones come with etchings of monsters or names already done, but some leave room for you to make your own. By starting from scratch, you can create exactly the grave markers that you want, such as one for family members, friends, or party attendees. Place the markers in strategic locations throughout the yard or make a bed of graves in one particular area.
- 2). Purchase or make cardboard coffins to place in front of some of the gravestone markers. Line the coffins with foam that has been covered in red, white or black satin or similar fabric. For an extra touch, add a small pillow for the corpse to be. Place the coffins in front of certain grave markers or stand one or two of them up around the yard.
- 3). Wrap an old dress form or three-dimensional skeleton in strips of white cotton or linen fabric to simulate a mummy. Attach a styrofoam wig head to the dress form to complete the look or leave the mummy decapitated. Smear fake blood made from corn syrup and red food coloring or that was purchased from a novelty or costume shop on the mummy and place it inside one of the standing coffins.
- 4). Place skeleton forms inside some of the coffins or stand them up on poles or trees around the graveyard area.
- 5). Put fake cobwebs that can be created from simple fiberfill in the trees and bushes. Pull the material thin to make it look authentic. Place plastic spiders, snakes and other insects inside the cobwebs.
- 6). Hang bats and different sizes of ghosts from trees. Plastic bats can be purchased at dollar stores or you can make your own from foam core board or wood. Drip some fake blood from their fangs for an extra spooky effect. Make ghosts from old white sheets or cheap white muslin that can be purchased at craft and fabric shops. Use batting or balls for the heads underneath the fabric and paint on facial features of your choice.
- 7). Place plastic snakes of all shapes, sizes and colors around the yard, both in plain sight and in semi-hidden locations like just under the edge of a bush or supposedly crawling up a tree trunk or hanging off a tree limb.
- 8). Create the look of a witches' cauldron with dry ice and liquid. Have a family member or friend dress as a witch stirring the cauldron, making predictions and frightening guests as they walk the graveyard.
- 9). Have family members and friends dress as grave creatures like ghouls, zombies, mummies and vampires. Have them lie in the coffins and hide in various areas throughout the yard. Instruct them to pop out and scare guests as they move by their areas.

Pipe spooky noises, screams and howls as well as scary music into the yard area and let it play throughout the night. - 11
Dress up as a mortician or crypt keeper and give tours to guests as they roam the graveyard.
