How to Get Rid of Cardinals Pecking at My House
- 1). Attach bird spikes to the flat surfaces, ledges and rafters of your home to make it impossible for cardinals to land on it. If cardinals can't land on your home, they can't peck at it. Bird spikes are strips of thick, steel needles that stick out in different directions. Purchase them from online bird control merchants, pet stores or hardware stores.
- 2). Place garbage bags over windows so the birds don't see their reflection in them and are less likely to peck at them. Use paper as an alternative, or cover your windows with window screens.
- 3). Hang bird feeders with sunflower seeds in an area far away from your house. The bird feeders may attract the cardinals and keep them away from your house. Add a birdbath or small water fountain for bathing and drinking to make the area even more attractive to the cardinals.
- 4). Blow up bright-colored balloons and draw scary eyes on them. Hang the balloons on your home to scare off cardinals. Use vertical-hanging strips of foil as an alternative scare tactic. The flickering of the sun on the foil scares off birds.
- 5). Use noise to deter nuisance cardinals. Turn up the volume on your radio, or drum on a pan with a spoon near areas where cardinals perch on your home. The noise may make the birds decide to move to another area.
