Strength Training - Seniors Look Healthier Younger and Active
With age, the strength of the muscles wear down, Abs that used to be flatter becomes saggy.
But at Riverbend Athletic Club of Edmonton something different is happening.
Many seniors have joined strength training and are now more active; the seniors themselves accept that they are feeling more alive after undergoing sets of physical exercise.
These adults in the age group of 71 to 81 seem to be one decade younger.
Once a week particularly on Thursday morning they try their hand at weight equipment.
Many people are worried about their conditions as they are too old or are not having sufficient strength to do strength training.
The benefits provided by strength training among the aged are many, that what the medical experts say.
Cathy Matthews a physical trainer at the club works with the seniors to guide them through various strength training.
She admits that the mentality of seniors and drive to live longer has impressed her.
The benefits that seniors earn are - they are able to play with their grandchildren, travel to different places and look after themselves more efficiently.
Most of the aging persons, part of the health club know each other for last 15 years and thereby establish a long bonding between them.
Muriel Mcpherson has joined the health club 8 years ago, the reason given by her to join the club was loneliness.
After the death of her sister she could not bear the loneliness.
Once she contacted the health club she didn't thought twice before the sign up.
With each passing day as she got involved in exercises, there was improvement in her health and subsequently her sadness was gone.
She like many others enjoys every bit of time with her friends at the club and eagerly waits for every day sessions at the health club.
