A Storm Door Is The First Line Of Defense For Your Homes Insulation
Storm doors are important for several reasons. Not only do they provide an extra layer of cost-saving insulation at the front door, but they also provide an extra layer of protection for the home itself; sealing the home from bugs and dust particles that may otherwise enter. Another advantage to having one is the ability to change from window to screen when the weather gets warm; thus allowing additional ventilation for the home.
Three Basic Types
Though there are always some exceptions, especially when customization is desired companies selling windows and doors usually offer three types of storm doors: Wood, vinyl and aluminum. Each has its advantages and disadvantages:
Wood: Wooden storm doors look great when theyre new. And when properly cared for, can last a long time. While these doors provide adequate insulation, wood also presents some maintenance issues. Every year or two, wooden doors must be primed, sealed and painted as they are susceptible to wear and tear from the weather. They also have a tendency to warp from moisture and expand and contract from exposure to the elements.
Vinyl: Vinyl storm doors are the least expensive of the three options, and provide decent insulation. They can also be easily customized, cleaned and molded to resemble the material or style of the home. However, this type of door does wear out a little faster than the others.
Aluminum: The most expensive type of storm door. And there's reasons for that. Aluminum doors look good and are more durable than the other types of storm doors. They resist moisture and corrosion, and can stand up to most weather conditions. They are not damaged by heat or cold, and cannot be warped by humidity or temperature fluctuations. They also come in a wide variety of thicknesses and styles, and are very well-insulated.
These days, most homeowners opt for aluminum doors. They might be a little more expensive, but the advantages and longevity of aluminum storm doors outweigh the disadvantages. Companies specializing in the sale and service of replacement windows will usually have a wide variety of aluminum doors for customers to choose from.
