Applying a faux leather treatment to a table is an easy way to revitalize an old, worn-down table. Faux leather blends into many types of decor, from traditional to modern. When you create a leather look on your table, you can customize the color and texture so that it perfectly matches your style. - Paint is an easy and inexpensive way to create a faux leather look on a table. Purchase a base coat and a glaze in colors that you want for your leather, such as browns or tans. Apply a base coat to the entire table surface. When that has dried. paint on a glaze. Crumple a large section of plastic wrap and then unfold it and apply it to the wet glaze. Use a stippling brush to push the plastic wrap into the wet glaze, and then remove the plastic. Use a soft cloth, like cheesecloth, and dab the wet glaze to blend. You can repeat the glazing with a second glaze color for additional depth.
- Decoupage uses paper and a thin glue solution to create the texture and feel of leather. Start by painting the table with a base coat and allow it to dry. Use brown bags or brown paper torn to create the texture by tearing them into uneven, random pieces. Mix a solution of two parts glue to one part water, and dip each piece of paper into the solution before smoothing it onto the surface. Overlap the pieces randomly and allow them to dry once the surface is covered. Use a glaze over the dried paper if you wish to distress the paper and make the faux leather look authentic.
- Upholster faux leather fabric to a tabletop for a realistic leather look. Measure your tabletop and purchase a piece of faux leather fabric large enough to cover the top and sides. Clean and dry the table top and then apply a strong fabric adhesive. Smooth the fabric over the top and pull it taut against the sides. Trim any excess fabric from the sides. Finish the look by using brads or upholstery tacks along the sides of the table, if desired.
