    • 1). Browse magazines to get ideas for designs for a pullover shirt for a child. Look at the pictures to see the shape of the garments being sold in stores. Analyze the width and length of the garments. Also look to see what kind of necklines and sleeves the garments have. Cut out pictures of garments you wish to use for design ideas.

    • 2). Sketch your ideas for a garment on blank pages in a notebook. Provide as many details as possible. Show whether the garment will have long or short sleeves. Also show the neckline of the garment and give details about the hemline. Decide whether the hemline will be straight or whether you will cut slits in the sides of the hem to give more movement to the wearer.

    • 3). Measure a pullover garment that currently fits the person you are designing a new garment for. Write down the length and width of the garment. Measure the width and length of the sleeves and add those measurements to your list. Describe any design features of the garment such as flaps, pockets, buttons and so on. Note very specific details about the size of each design feature.

    • 4). Use a brown paper bag turned to the reverse side to create a pattern for the new garment. You may need to tape two or more bags together. Use the measurements on your list to sketch a drawing on the brown paper for a pullover pattern. Include in the pattern any special design items such as pockets or flaps. Then cut out the pattern from the brown bag paper.

    • 5). Locate fabric to use for a pullover garment for a child. You may wish to use items from around the home such as a sheet, light towel or adult clothing. Use the pattern on the brown bag paper to cut out the fabric for the shirt. Your garment is then ready to sew together.
