    • 1). Locate a reputable local tanning salon and request a tour of their facilities from a representative. Inspect the tanning beds for cleanliness and bulb brightness. If the tanning salon is sanitary, the beds are in good condition and the staff helpful, schedule a tanning session or purchase a membership.

    • 2). Use a washcloth or loofah to wash the skin prior to tanning. This removes dead skin cells that might inhibit a dark tan.

    • 3). Purchase a tanning lotion that accelerates the tanning process while offering protection to your skin. Most tanning salons offer a wide selection of quality tanning lotions. Apply the tanning lotion over your entire body prior to a tanning session.

    • 4). Purchase a post-tanning hydrating lotion that will help soothe your skin after exposure to UV rays. This will replenish vitamins lost during the tanning process. Apply the hydrating lotion over your entire body following each tanning session.

    • 5). Tan in sessions of five to eight minutes to build up a base tan. Do this daily for five to seven days.

    • 6). Tan each day or every other day after building your base tan to achieve your skin's darkest tanning potential.

    • 7). Once your skin quits darkening after each tanning session, stop using the tanning bed, as you will only be damaging your skin. Repeat the darkening process when your tan begins to fade.
