House training puppies can go very smoothly, or it can be very rough, depending on if you know the best approach to take for your situation.
When I got my first puppy, I was so in love with her, I paid no attention to the concept of house training.
Puppies are so cute and cuddly, who cares about a little puddle here and there? Well, I can assure that you after that initial honeymoon stage with your new puppy, you will become quickly frustrated with the potty training or lack of it.
There are a few key concepts that can really make all the difference between success and failure when it comes to house training puppies.
If you follow these key concepts, your house training will go so much more smoothly.
For me personally, I really didn't understand what I was missing.
I was following along in the basic potty training steps, but there were some vital tips I guess I just glossed over initially, and therefore the potty training just never took hold.
That is, until I figured these things out! And I wanted to be sure and share them with you, since these steps are so easy to over look.
Here they are:
  • Immediate Response-This is one of the most important to remember, when potty training, the reward for good behavior needs to be immediate, not 10 minutes later.

  • Consistent-Your puppy needs to know that each and every time, there is one area that he goes to for the toilet.
He needs to also know that every time he goes there (during the training process) he is going to be rewarded with instant praise, treats and affection.
  • Use a Leash-Sometimes puppies do not know what they are supposed to be doing when you take them over to the potty area, and so they are easily distracted and wander off.
Use a leash to keep them on task.
  • Start right away-the longer you wait to get serious about house training, the longer it will take.
The reason is because your puppy is learning that it is OK to go on the carpet, and so in addition to time for training, you also need to account time for unlearning the bad habit.
  • Treats-treats, praise and affection is very important when it comes to house training puppies.
The moment you pup has finished his business, you want to go wild with praise, give a delicious treat immediately and give you pup lots of affection.
It's important to make your pup understand you are thrilled with his behavior, and this will encourage him to continue this behavior.
If you follow these five tips, you should definitely see success in a short period of time.
I struggled for many months until I discovered what I was missing, and once I got these tips down pat, my pups were house trained in just a few days.
Be patient and follow these tips, and you should start to see immediate improvement.
House training puppies takes time!
