    Blot the Area

    • One of the most important things to do if your pet has recently urinated on your carpet is to blot, not rub, the area completely with rags or paper towels. Place several paper towels directly on top of the soiled area, and step on them repeatedly, letting the toweling absorb all of the urine. If you get to it quickly, this may be the only step you need to take. Flush the area with water several times, and blot after each time, which is the best way to ensure you have removed all the urine.

    Hydrogen Peroxide

    • Remove urine that has dried or set in a carpet by pouring hydrogen peroxide directly on the area. A cup or two of peroxide should work, depending on the size of the stain. The peroxide loosens the stain from the carpet fibers and neutralizes the smell. Blot the peroxide up after several minutes, and scrub the area with dish soap and hot water. Rinse the area with hot water, and blot up until most of the water is gone. If the area still smells, repeat the process. Adding lemon juice to the rinse water also helps with the odor.

    White Vinegar

    • A solution of half vinegar and half water neutralizes the ammonia in the urine and rinses the stain from the carpet. If the fibers of the carpet are long, work the vinegar solution in with a scrub brush. Let it sit for several minutes before blotting up. Rinse again with plain hot water and blot. The smell of the vinegar subsides within an hour or two.
