Schlage Deadbolt Instructions
- 1). Open the door and place into a bracket. Tape the deadbolt template with the cross-haired door latch section centered across the edge of the door. Position the template about 4 inches above the doorknob lever. Mark the center of the latch and the deadbolt in the template with a pencil, pushing the pencil through the template at the center points to mark the surface of the door as a guide point for drilling. Remove the template.
- 2). Place the pilot drill bit in the center of the saw onto the side of the door where the pencil mark is located. Start the drill and push the pilot bit through the door until the hole saw hits the surface. When the pilot bit emerges from the other side of the door, stop the saw and remove it. Finish cutting the hole through the door from the other side, using the fully drilled pilot hole to guide the saw through to the already-cut portion of the door. Remove any debris from the cut hole.
- 3). Switch to the spade drill bit and place the point of the bit against the pencil mark at the side of the door. Cut a parallel line through the door edge into the center of the cavity created by the hole saw to create the deadbolt latch hole. Drill through the cavity and create a 3/8-inch hole on the rear of the cavity parallel with the latch hole. Remove the drill bit from the cut hole and clear away any debris.
- 4). Remove the door bracket and close the door. Trace through the latch hole onto the adjoining doorjamb, drawing the complete circumference of the latch hole. Open the door and use the 7/8-inch drill bit to bore two overlapping holes, one directly atop the other with a 5/16-inch overlap into the door jam, centered on the traced jamb hole, running 1-1/8 inch deep.
- 5). Place the strike box from the deadbolt kit (the shallow box-like piece that the latch goes into) on the doorjamb centered into the overlapping holes. Outline the face of the strike box on the doorjamb. Chisel out the outlined face using the hammer and chisel so the strike box will fit flush onto the doorjamb.
- 6). Follow the same procedure with the deadbolt latch from the deadbolt kit to create a chiseled recessed area on the edge of the door.
- 7). Install the deadbolt latch through the latch hole and into the edge of the door. Position the latch with the portion labeled "top" upwards and the bolt retracted into the bolt cylinder. Push the latch through the drilled hole in the edge of the door until the faceplate is in the chiseled recess lies flush with the door edge. Secure the latch in place with the two 3/4-inch wood screws in the kit.
- 8). Mount the lock to the door by pushing the outside cylinder unit containing the keyhole, with the “Schlage” logo upward, through the installed latch. The round pin on the bolt goes through the slot in the latch, while the long flat driver bar goes beneath the latch. Place the inside cylinder unit with the thumb-turn latch straight up so that the flat driver bar in the outside cylinder passes through the driver bar slot on the rear of the inside unit. Align the screw holes in the two units and then secure the cylinders in place using the mounting screws contained in the kit.
- 9). Place the strike plate reinforcement piece into the chiseled hole in the doorjamb so that it frames the drilled strike plate hole. Slide the square of the strike box through the reinforcement piece, aligning the flat of the box with the reinforcement piece with the screw holes in the reinforcement piece. Align the screw holes of the strike plate with those of the strike box and place them over the box so that the strike plate is flush with the surface of the doorjamb. Secure the three pieces in place using the 3/4-inch wood screws.

Test the fit and placement of the deadbolt by closing the door and opening and closing the deadbolt into the strike box. Make any necessary adjustments.
