How to Apply for a Credit Card When You Turn 18
- 1). Get a job. The Credit Card Act of 2009 requires people under 21 to show they have regular income allowing them to make monthly payments on a credit card. A full-time job is better than part-time, but that might be difficult if you are a student. Potential creditors will also consider how long you have been employed, and will evaluate your salary and living expenses before making a decision.
- 2). Get a parent or guardian to co-sign. You can qualify for a credit card without a job by having a parent or guardian co-sign. The parent or guardian will be responsible for paying off the card if you default. This is the easiest way to qualify for a credit card at 18. However, your co-signer must have a good credit score to qualify.
- 3). Apply for the credit card using either your income or a co-signer as a qualification. Apply at a bank or credit union and wait for an answer.
