- 1). Choose a shade that is, at most, two shades lighter than your natural shade. This will help avoid any hair disasters and in the case that you don't like it, fixing it will be much easier the less drastic the change is.
- 2). Choose a formula. Single-process color includes the color lifter and the new color in one step. However, depending on the color you're trying to achieve this may not be available. It's best to purchase the color from a beauty supply store where the range of options is much broader and the staff is well-equipped to help and inform you of the differences between products.
- 3). Do a test strip. Regardless of how anxious you are to get that new color on your hair, choose an inconspicuous piece of hair and follow the directions on the box. If your hair looks good and isn't falling out, proceed to follow the directions on the box for coloring your entire head. If your hair is falling out or you're not satisfied with the color, discontinue use. Different formulas have different application methods. Following the directions on the box is essential. Leaving color on too long can burn the scalp and destroy the hair, not leaving it on long enough will change the desired colored.
- 4). Rinse thoroughly. The chemicals are harsh on the hair and on the scalp. To avoid irritation, rinse hair until the water runs completely clear.
- 5). Condition the hair. Stripping hair of it's color also strips it of it's moisture. To keep hair protected, looking healthy and feeling soft. Keeping hair conditioned will also help prevent breakage. Use a deep conditioner on a weekly basis. Investing in salon-quality products after you've bleached your hair can make a big different in how quickly your hair recuperates from the coloring process. Most inexpensive products that you can buy in grocery stores or pharmacies only coat the hair so that it appears healthy. Salon-quality products actually condition the hair to help repair it.
