Law and Security Courses
- Courses in law and security administration prepare students for careers in security, customs, immigration, insurance, public protection and gambling and recreational industries. Law and security administration courses focus on corporate security policy development and the overseeing of corporate facilities. Students also learn about community and national security assessments, especially with regard to immigrations and customs. Some courses specialize in law and security as related to correctional institutions. One area of law and security specializes in electronic law and security.
- Courses often focus on risk management, because students will need to make reasonable efforts to minimize risks at a business in proportion to the budget. Students learn about conflict management, because not all forms of conflict found on the job need the same response. Legal knowledge allows students to know what actions they can take during various security-related events and what actions constitute a crime. Students must become aware of liability concerns that corporations face when protecting their facilities, property and employees. Some schools place greater emphasis on general business practices so that students understand how security measures seamlessly blend into standard business practices.
- Students wishing to take undergraduate courses in law and security must have at least a GED. Many fitness and lifestyle courses are required for the law and security degree, because students must have good physical health to provide physical restraint to criminals. Students who do not meet certain health standards may be unable to pursue the degree. Students are also expected to take courses in law and justice services.
- As technology rapidly expands and becomes an increasingly significant part of law and security, schools have offered courses on law and data security. Students who acquire credentials from these courses could go into law enforcement, or they could specialize in IT and work for the security department of a company. Students with specialization in this area will help companies combat hackers, malware, phishing, data theft and security compromises.
- Students are expected to learn a variety of skills in the law and security courses in addition to learning the content areas. Students must develop the leadership skills necessary to guide security personnel and provide active solutions to problems for employers. Students must also develop competent writing and communication skills so that they can competently communicate information back and forth. Students are also often expected to get certification in first aid and basic rescue.
