The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) defines social workers as individuals who help clients deal with issues such as substance abuse, domestic violence and chronic illness. Training for social workers consists of a bachelor's degree at minimum, although most clinical positions require a master's in social work (MSW) degree. The MSW degree can be earned online at several schools, preparing graduates to complete the two years of work experience needed to become licensed in most states. - The School of Social Work at the University of Tennessee Knoxville offers an online MSW degree that can be completed on a part-time or full-time basis. Full-time program applicants need a minimum GPA of 2.7, and part-time students can complete their degree in two to four years, depending on standing (advanced or regular). Degree candidates take courses related to social work practice with children, families and older adults.
