We all know that online casual games are popular, but just how many people actually play them? According to a new report from game developer Spil Games, 40 percent of all internet users are playing these games.
Spil, the developer behind massively popular online games like Uphill Rush 3, revealed the news in its 2010 State of Gaming report. The report analyzed data from both comScore and the developer's own players.
So how many people is 40 percent of all internet users? A staggering 510 million. That's right, more than half a billion people play casual games online.
For Spil and its network of web portals, which includes Games.co.uk, this amounted to 400 million gameplays a month and 150 gameplays every second, for a grand total of five billion gameplays over the course of 2010. So what is everybody playing? Well the report goes a step further and reveals the top game types amongst different audiences. For girls, the top three genres are makeover, hairdresser, and horse games. Teenage boys, meanwhile, spent most of their time playing racing, sports, and action games. And for women, the top three game types are quiz, puzzle, and time management.
"2010 was a record-breaking year in many respects," Oscar Diele, Chief Marketing Officer of Spil, said in a statement. "But what's most interesting are the trends we're seeing in the casual gaming space: who is playing, what they're playing, and how frequently they're playing.
This year we've really seen casual gaming come of age, especially at Spil Games. We've pioneered the introduction of HTML5 as the technology of choice for mobile gaming, and we expect phenomenal growth in this sector in 2011.
