- 1). Add hot water slowly to the bentonite clay to create a batter-like consistency. Mix the clay and water well, adding a little more water if necessary.
- 2). Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes to help dissolve the lumps. Stir it a little more after the 10 minutes.
- 3). Apply the bentonite clay mixture to your dry or wet dreads.
- 4). Leave the clay mixture on your hair for about 20 minutes. During this time, the clay will draw out all lint, dirt and debris.
- 5). Rinse your dreads thoroughly.
- 6). Repeat washing with bentonite clay every 5 to 10 days with new dreads to avoid unraveling the locks. As the locks and coils retain their shape, you can wash more often. Lonnice Brittenum Bonner, author of "Nice dreads: Hair Care Basics and Inspiration for Colored Girls Who've Considered Locking Their Hair," writes, "One of the best tips I've heard is to treat your locks as if they were an exquisite silk garment."
