Sanding Mahogany Furniture
- 1). Sand the entire surface of the wood with 180-grit sandpaper, taking particular care to remove all of the fingerprints and handling marks from the wood. Sand with the grain so you don't end up removing it.
- 2). Apply a wood filler that matches the chosen stain color to any of the open pores in the wood. Use the applicator that comes with the filler. Allow the filler to dry for the recommended period of time.
- 3). Apply the stain to the wood with a rag. Wipe away excess stain using a clean rag to achieve the correct color. Use a stain that has an alkyd-resin base.
- 4). Apply a clear finish as the second and third coats with a paintbrush once the stain finish dries. Use a solvent borne or water-borne finish, allowing the first coat to dry before applying the next.
