- 1). Turn off power to the A/C unit. Turn the A/C's power switch to the "Off" position. Many A/C units have a disconnect switch located next to the outside unit.
- 2). Remove the access covers to reveal the run capacitor.
- 3). Connect an alligator clip from each jumper to each end of a 20,000-ohm 5-watt resistor.
- 4). Connect the other end of one of the jumpers to one capacitor terminal.
- 5). Connect the other end of the second jumper to the shaft of a screwdriver with an insulated handle.
- 6). Touch the end of the screwdriver to the second capacitor terminal. Hold the screwdriver to the terminal for one minute. This ensures that the capacitor is discharged and safe to handle.
